35 Years.

Today is my 35th birthday. This means nothing.

Except that now, psychologically, I’m on my way to 40 instead of enjoying my early 30s.

I’m not afraid of any of this. I’ll tell you why. Actually, I’ll let Steven Pressfield tell you why.

He summed it up quite well in  Turning Pro (A follow up to The War of Art)

Once we turn pro, we’re like sharks who have tasted blood, or renunciants who have glimpsed the face of God. For us, there is no finish line. No bell ends the bout. Life is the pursuit. Life is the hunt. When our hearts burst… then we’ll go out, and no sooner.

In Pressfield’s terms, I haven’t turned pro yet (more on that later), but the sentiment resonates regardless.

Maybe I die tomorrow.
Maybe I die in 50 years.

Either way, the point is to keep battling every day – with intention, energy, passion and discipline. We get caught up in the progression of time. We think about being middle aged or going over the hill or getting wrinkles or whatever the hell else.

Numbers. It’s all just numbers. And the more time you spend thinking about them, the less time you spend making things and putting them into the world.

Go make stuff.

Only 35? ;) Not that you look older but you have a very wise head.

    Happy Birthday!

    I never did like numbers.

Heidi – Happy Birthday, and you’ve already done more than most people much older than you! I just turned 55 a few weeks ago, and it’s no different at this age. I agree with Byron above – do epic shit, and don’t worry at all about the age you do it. The older you are, the more epic it is that you can do it, right?

Have a fantastical day. You make the world a better place, keep it up no matter your number.

I agree with Rich. Don’t pay attention to numbers just keep achieving and it will only get better. Over the hill is completely mental. I am almost 60 and I haven’t even climbed to the top of the hill. I will be “over the hill” the day I die. Happy birthday Heidi!

Happiest of birthdays, Heids. You’ve lived the equivalent of four 35-year lives by now, and here’s to 50 more.

    Happy Birthday. And yes.

  8. Holly says:

Wait. It does mean something. Now you can race cross as a master if you so choose. Congrats on another year of inspiring adventures!

Happy (belated) birthday! Welcome to 35!
More people should be like you.

Thank you for inspiring me to live life to its fullest – and to do what Byron said. Which is awesome.
