Visual Spinach: Three Motivational Videos

Motivation.
It’s the thing I get asked about almost more than anything else.

My usual answer is, “Don’t rely on motivation. create habits and then be consistent.” So, get up in the morning at 5:00am not because you’re motivated to do it (trust me, you’ll be waiting for a long time), but because that’s just what you do.

But the truth is, sometimes we need a little ass-kicking. Something to get the blood flowing so we can rally. I find most of my motivation from other people in life, but when the internet is the only option out there, there are plenty of options that will get you fired up. These three have been doing it for me lately (PS: I found them all at Devour.com):

Eiger Speed Record

This guy makes me want to run and jump and do dangerous, life-threatening shit. Moreover, he makes me happy – because he’s clearly happy in his adventures (madhouse crazy too, but that’s another story). Finally, this video features a song I put up a few days ago: Coming Home by Radical Face. Fuckyeahinspiringlittleclimber!

Navy Seal Ad

Yeah, I know this is basically a lame navy seal ad, but listen to this guy talk about his work day. Listen to the way he uses his time and doesn’t waste a single minute of it. Lack of time is another big complaint I hear a lot. Don’t wait to find more time, make your own.

Greatest Pep Talks Ever

“It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep getting up again.” and other gems. Sure, these are all dudes and the dude-y testo-fest at the end is a little scary, but fuckit – I love a good sports drama as much as anybody else and this reminds me to go head butt the world every now and then.

      That was intense!
I hope everyone on Springwater trail will forgive me for muttering, “I AM A CHAMPION!” as I roll along. :)

Goodness, that Steck video gave me the chills. Amazing!

Cool vids. the Eiger thing gave me nothing but terror. Do they send you home if you fall 1000 ft into a glacier? Only good thing about that is the remains will be frozen. much easier to scrape up.

I love the Eiger and Navy Seal videos. Really reminds me that the difference between success really comes down – sometimes – to doing whatever it takes even when we don’t feel like it. I’ll definitely think of that Seal getting up at 3 am to go for a run the next time I’m feeling lazy. Thanks!

While the vids were cool, I think your first comment hits home for me more than the vids – be consistent…get up in the morning … because that’s just what you do!

For me, if I really need some motivation, I’ll call up a solid running buddy who will surely give me healthy dose of ridicule if I don’t show up for a run. Does the trick every time!

    Thanks for the post!

Agreed – whenever I have someone out there meeting me, I’m much more inclined to stick to the plan. Friends are super good for accountability. Especially snarky, ridiculing ones :)

Love the Eiger clip :) & I read about that Goggins guy basically taking on ultramarathons on no training just grit and determination! Hell yeah!

These Ironman video clips get me everytime…
